connections & understanding
“The first noticeable progress is the number of working women aged between 16 and 64 years old. While in 1971 53% of them had a professional life, this proportion increased to 67% in 2013. However, even if 47% of the working population is constituted by women, only 35% of managerial positions are covered by women.”
The biggest gap of power in the workplace is job positions/roles. As the evidence shows, it is always more likely for a male employee to receive a higher paying and more authoritative job. These senior roles that men fill determine the work life style and details of all other employees, especially lower roles, which tend to be women. With a majority of women in lower roles, it makes them powerless. This powerlessness includes not being able to make executive decisions, unable to hire new people (new females), and not being able to fight for their equal pay. These senior roles include many jobs for women, but the most impactful would be jobs in the government. according to peacecorps.com,
“In legislatures around the world, women are outnumbered 4 to 1, yet women's political participation is crucial for achieving gender equality and genuine democracy.” This lack of power carried throughout government causes yet another form of inequality in the workplace. Often, women are payed less, not only because of imbalance of power, but also because of rights and laws. The World Bank says there are 104 economies with labour laws that restrict the types of jobs women can undertake, and when and where they are permitted to work. It estimates that this affects the employment choices of 2.7 billion women. This means that there are billions of women in the world that are affected by this combination of power imbalance, lack of equity, and biased rights and laws. With more women in the government, there would be an increased influence of equal pay and to fix these laws. Specific examples of cause and effects:
Lack of power: - wage gap - more and more unheard voices - less women employed (because of more male dominance in higher positions) Unjust rights: - less women in the workplace - women get lower paying/level positions due to bias. - denied health care plans from work Lack of equity: - wage gap - unfair working hours/shifts - women become more susceptible to harassment |
